秋風が心地よく吹き抜ける今日この頃、音楽制作の現場では常に新たな挑戦が待ち受けている。今回、筆者に舞い込んできた仕事は、実に興味深いものであった。すでに発売されているが、2024年9月18日にリリースされた藤川千愛さんのミニアルバム「すみません、愛を落としたのですが…」付属のBlu-rayにて、ミックスとマスタリングを担当させていただいた。本来ならば発売当日にこの記事を書き上げるべきであったが、諸般の事情により遅筆となってしまった。ここで、ミックスとマスタリングについて、音楽制作における重要性を踏まえつつ、簡潔に説明を加えたい。ミックスとは、個々の楽器やボーカルの音源を調整し、一つの統一された楽曲として仕上げる過程である。具体的には、各音源の音量バランス、定位（ステレオ空間での配置）、エフェクト処理などを緻密に行う。この作業は、楽曲の印象を大きく左右する重要な工程であり、アーティストの意図を正確に反映させることが求められる。一方、マスタリングは、ミックス済みの音源をさらに洗練させる最終段階である。全体的な音圧や周波数バランスの調整、ステレオイメージの拡張などを行い、様々な再生環境で最適な音質を実現する。また、アルバム全体の音の統一感を出すことも、マスタリングエンジニアの重要な役割である。これらの作業は、単なる技術的な処理ではなく、音楽の本質を理解し、アーティストの感性を尊重しつつ、聴き手に最高の音楽体験を提供するための芸術的な営みでもある。本Blu-rayは、今年5月に渋谷Spotify O-EASTで開催された”藤川千愛 BIRTHDAY LIVE 2024『音楽それは最も甘美な浮かれポンチ』”の模様を全16曲収録したものである。ライブの熱気と藤川千愛さんの圧巻のパフォーマンスが、画面を通じて視聴者の心に直接届くような内容となっている。ライブ音源のミックスは、スタジオ録音とは異なる独特の難しさがある。会場の響きや観客の歓声、そしてステージ上の生々しい演奏音をバランス良く調和させる必要がある。さらに、ライブならではの一回性や臨場感を損なわないよう細心の注意を払いつつ、音質の向上を図るという、相反する要求を満たさなければならない。バンドのミックスは、複数の楽器が同時に鳴り響く複雑な音響空間を創出する点で、非常に挑戦的かつ魅力的な作業である。各楽器の特性を理解し、それぞれの音色を活かしつつ、全体としての調和を図ることが求められる。特にライブ盤となると、その場の一体感や熱気を損なうことなく、かつ音質を向上させるという点で、さらに高度な技術と感性が必要となる。しかし、この難しさこそが、音楽制作者としての腕の見せどころでもある。今回の仕事では、これらの困難を乗り越え、非常に満足のいく仕上がりになったと自負している。藤川千愛さんの伸びやかな歌声と、バンドの息の合った演奏の魅力を最大限に引き出せたのではないかと思う。各楽器の音色や定位を丁寧に調整し、ライブの臨場感を保ちつつ、クリアで力強いサウンドを実現できたことは、エンジニアとして大きな喜びである。この作品を通じて、藤川千愛さんの音楽がより多くの人々の心に響くことを切に願っている。音楽制作に携わる者として、このような素晴らしい機会を得られたことに深い感謝の念を抱きつつ、今後も技術の研鑽に励んでいく所存である。音楽は、時として言葉以上に人の心を動かす力を持つ。その音楽の力を最大限に引き出し、リスナーに届けることが、我々音楽制作者の使命である。今回の経験を糧に、さらなる高みを目指して邁進していく決意を新たにした次第である。
As the pleasant autumn breeze wafts through the air, new challenges constantly await in the world of music production. Recently, I was entrusted with a truly fascinating project. Although already released, I had the honor of handling the mixing and mastering for the Blu-ray accompanying Chiai Fujikawa’s mini-album “Sumimasen, Ai wo Otoshita no Desuga…” (Excuse me, I seem to have dropped my love…), which was released on September 18, 2024. While I had intended to write this article on the day of release, various circumstances delayed my pen.Allow me to briefly explain the importance of mixing and mastering in music production. Mixing is the process of adjusting individual instrument and vocal tracks to create a unified song. This involves meticulously balancing volume levels, positioning sounds in the stereo field, and applying effects. It’s a crucial step that significantly influences the impression of a track and requires accurately reflecting the artist’s intentions. Mastering, on the other hand, is the final stage where the mixed audio is further refined. It involves adjusting overall sound pressure and frequency balance, enhancing the stereo image, and ensuring optimal sound quality across various playback systems. Mastering engineers also play a vital role in creating a cohesive sound throughout an album. These processes are not merely technical but artistic endeavors that require understanding the essence of music, respecting the artist’s sensibilities, and providing listeners with the best possible musical experience.This Blu-ray captures all 16 songs from “Chiai Fujikawa BIRTHDAY LIVE 2024 ‘Music: The Sweetest Intoxication'”, held this May at Shibuya Spotify O-EAST. It conveys the live energy and Chiai Fujikawa’s stunning performance directly to viewers through the screen. Mixing live recordings presents unique challenges compared to studio recordings. It requires balancing the venue’s acoustics, audience reactions, and raw stage performances. Moreover, it demands preserving the one-time nature and atmosphere of the live event while improving sound quality – seemingly contradictory requirements.Mixing a band performance is both challenging and exciting, as it involves creating a complex acoustic space where multiple instruments resonate simultaneously. It requires understanding the characteristics of each instrument and harmonizing their tones while maintaining overall balance. Live album mixing is particularly demanding, necessitating advanced technical skills and sensibility to enhance sound quality without compromising the sense of unity and energy of the performance. However, this very challenge is what allows music producers to showcase their expertise.In this project, I believe I overcame these difficulties and achieved a highly satisfactory result. I feel I was able to bring out the best of Chiai Fujikawa’s soaring vocals and the band’s tight performance. Carefully adjusting the tone and positioning of each instrument while preserving the live atmosphere and achieving a clear, powerful sound brought me great joy as an engineer.I sincerely hope that through this work, Chiai Fujikawa’s music will resonate with even more people. As someone involved in music production, I’m deeply grateful for this wonderful opportunity and am committed to continually honing my skills. Music has the power to move hearts more than words sometimes can. Our mission as music producers is to maximize this power and deliver it to listeners. With this experience as a foundation, I’ve renewed my determination to strive for greater heights in my craft.
